CARACAS. Venezuelan Vice President Elias Jaua said that head of state Hugo Chavez continues to lead the nation and will be "the candidate of the revolution" in the coming presidential elections in December 2012.

"We have absolute faith in God and the certainty that Hugo Chavez will be the candidate of the revolution, of the Venezuelan people, of Venezuelan patriots, and that after 2012 he will continue to be president," Jaua said Friday in an exclusive interview on Telesur.

The vice president said the day after the Venezuelan president announced from Cuba that he had been operated for a cancerous tumor, that "Chavez will not step down from his position of command" because he leads and will continue to lead the country.

He said that the president's process of recovery has been satisfactory and that "all the medical conditions exist to make everything come out fine."

Jaua said that consequently there is no need for him, as vice president, to take over the functions of head of state since Chavez "is fully exercising his mandate" as well as enjoying the leave of absence given him by the national legislature until his health is restored.

"I preside over the Cabinet, coordinate the activities of the ministers and public policy, I have the duty to represent the president on state occasions...so that the president exercises his strategic command and executes it through the executive vice president," Jaua said.

"The official spokesman of the government has never lied to the people about the president's medical condition, and when in the last stage it became known that he had carcinogenic elements, it was the exclusive duty of the president to tell the country, "we couldn't disclose anything about the situation," the vice president said.

Chavez has been in power for more than a decade and can run again in 2012 after voters ended constitutional term limits in a referendum two years ago.
