Cuban state agency Prensa Latina joined a Latin American newswire consortium made up of nine government news agencies.

Prensa Latina aside, the Unión Latioamericana de Agencias de Noticias (ULAN) consists of Telam of Argentina, Bolivia’s ABI, Brazil’s EBC, Ecuador’s Andes, Guatemala’s AGN, Mexico’s Notimex, Paraguay’s IP and Venezuela’s AVN.

At a meeting in Caracas at the headquarters of state oil company PdVSA Friday, officials representing the nine agencies agreed on statutes to create ULAN and the launch of a Web portal featuring the combined news — including articles, photos and videos — from participating agencies.

Argentina’s Telam will be in charge of designing the Web portal, and Cuba will train participating journalists at the Instituto Internacional de Periodismo in Havana.

Venezuelan Communications Minister Andrés Izarra said ULAN will help “articulate our own voice that allows to project our identity on a global scale.”

Venezuela has been the driver of a similar effort in the realm of television. Caracas-based Telesur, launched in 2005, has seven participating nations, including Cuba.
