2011.05.23 - 17:33:12 / radiorebelde.icrt.cu. 2011 Capablanca Memorial HAVANA, CUBA.- Ukrainian chess player Vassily Ivanchuk defeated Vietnamese Le Quang Liem in the final round of the 2011 Capablanca Memorial that concluded this weekend in Havana and in the process took the title of the annual competition.

Prior to the beginning of the final match, the Vietnamese was leading the standings with 6.5 points and only a victory could secure the crown for Ivanchuk, who had 5.5 units. Thus, 49 moves of a French Defense later, the Ukrainian star walked away not only with the win in the match but also with his fifth Capablanca Memorial title winning the tiebreak after the two players finished with 6.5 points apiece.

Also in the Elite Group, Russian world junior champion Dmitry Andreikin placed third with 5.5 units, followed by Czech David Navara (5.0), and Cubans Leinier Dominguez (4.5) and Lazaro Bruzon (2.0), who had his worst tournament in years.

In the Premier Group, the crown was for Peruvian Emilio Cordova —with a better tiebreak than Canadian Mark Bluvshtein as they both finished with six units— while Cuban Aramis Alvarez (5.5) was third.

The Open I and Open II groups were for Cubans Carlos Hevia (7.5) and Kevel Oliva (7.0), respectively.
