Esteban Lazo, Vice-president of the Cuban Council of State, met on Friday with Haitian President Rene Preval in Port-au-Prince, an occasion when they focused on the fruitful bilateral relations of cooperation existing between Cuba and Haiti.

The Cuban leader thanked Preval for the granting of Haiti’s top decoration to the Cuban Medical Brigade for its work in the struggle against the serious cholera epidemic that Caribbean nation is suffering since October, the Granma newspaper reported on Saturday.

Lazo was also received by president-elect Michel Joseph Martelly at his office in Bourdon, Petionville.

Martelly expressed his wish to maintain and deepen the bonds of cooperation existing between the two neighboring nations, while Lazo reiterated Cuba’s willingness to continue that cooperation and work for the most sacred objective, the people.

Likewise, the head of the Cuban delegation met with outgoing Prime Minister Jean Max Bellerive at his official residence in the Haitian capital, a meeting that served to corroborate the development of bonds between the two countries.

Later, at the Cuban embassy, he held a working meeting with the heads of the Cuban missions
of cooperation in Haiti, which was attended by ambassador Ricardo Garcia.

Lazo arrived in Haiti on Friday heading the Cuban delegation to the inauguration of president-elect Michel Joseph Martelly, scheduled for Saturday at the National Parliament. The delegation is also made up by First Deputy Foreign Minister Marcelino Medina.
