By The Associated Press (CP) NEW YORK, N.Y. — Mexico will open its Gold Cup defence against El Salvador and meet Costa Rica and Cuba in the first round of the football championship of North and Central America and the Caribbean.

Tournament host the United States will play Canada, Panama and Guadeloupe in Group C, and Group B includes Grenada, Guatemala and Honduras.

Costa Rica and Cuba play the tournament opener on June 5 in Arlington, Texas, followed by Mexico-El Salvador.

If Mexico wins its group, it will play a quarterfinal on June 18 in East Rutherford, New Jersey, against the third-place team from Group B or C.

The semifinals are on June 22 in Houston, with the final on June 25 in Pasadena, California.

The winner receives a berth in the 2013 Confederations Cup in Brazil, preparation for the World Cup to be held there the following year.

Mexico won its fifth Gold Cup in 2009. The Americans were four-time champions, and Canada was the only other winner, in 2000. The Canadian Press.
