Havana, Jan 31 (Prensa Latina) The People's Provincial Court in Havana issued sentences on Monday for those convicted of the 2010 events at the Havana Psychiatric Hospital, following a public trial that concluded earlier this month, Granma newspaper reported on Monday.

The defendants were convicted of the charges brought by the prosecutor and received prison sentences of five to 15 years, with one defendant receiving the maximum fine stipulated by the Penal Code.

Their crimes were neglect of the disabled and severely disabled, aggravated by the reported deaths of various persons; embezzlement, and failure to carry out the duty of preserving the assets of economic institutions.

The sentences issued by the court were the following: for neglect of the disabled and severely disabled and embezzlement, Wilfredo Castillo Donate, hospital director, 15 years'prison; Roberto Maza Izquierdo, assistant director for administration, 14 years'prison, and Josefina Diaz Arango, principle nutritionist, 12 years'prison.

For the crime of neglect of the disabled and severely disabled, Arianna Ramos Sainz de la Peña, assistant director of the clinical/surgical department, and Ivo Noa Gonzalez, assistant director of nursing, received 10 years'prison each, and Susana Angela Borges Gonzalez, assistant director for psychiatric services, seven years'prison.

For the crime of embezzlement, the following prison sentences were issued: Miguel Villalobo Lopez, head of the central warehouse, 10 years; Alvaro Fidel Castañeda Rodriíguez, head of refrigeration, 9 years; Darwy Marquez Matamoros, kitchen team and shift head, 6 years; Nestor Dias García, head of the kitchen/dining room department, 6 years; Gerardo Miguez Callejas, head of supplies, 5 years; Dionisio Alfaro Feijoo, assistant head of the kitchen/dining room, 6 years, and Jorge Mateo Lay Gonzalez, cook, 6 years.

For the crime of failing to carry out the duty to preserving the assets of economic institutions, Yanet Perez Rodriguez, head of pharmacy services, was sentenced to pay a fine of 6,000 pesos.

In addition to their prison sentences, Castillo Donate and Noa Gonzalez were also banned from working in their profession, post or trade for the same length of time as their prison sentences. Those two and the other defendants who received prison sentences are also banned from voting or from holding leadership posts.

The defendants may file appeals with the People's Supreme Court within 10 working days subsequent to their notification, the Granma newspaper reported.

Aside from the criminal trial, severe administrative penalties were issued to other individuals involved in the events, the newspaper reported.
