Written by Maritza Padilla Valdés. December 2010.The tobacco growers of Pinar del Rio, major producer of the leaf in Cuba, expect to conclude the year with most of the areas planted in the best growing season.

So far, there are over 11 880 hectares planted out of the 17 358 on schedule, meanwhile they are speeding up in search of higher yields and quality, and the lower incidence of plagues and diseases.

There are seedlings available to materialize this strategy added to a good work with the seedbeds, since the traditional furrows join the technified ones with a remarkable energy saving.

That experience, born at the tobacco enterprise of the municipality of San Luis, allows to count on a permanent area created for that purposes located in lands near the plantations, which avoids travelling long distances to supply the seedlings.

According to studies made, the traditional furrows can provide more than two thousand seedlings and the technified ones until 10 thousand. It is also favourable for the present season the phytosanitary state of the plantations.

Officials of the sector highlighted the completeness and stability of the labor force in this harvest season in order to reach higher efficiency and quality levels.

The tobacco fields of Pinar del Rio are regarded the best in the world, while the territory provides with over 50 percent of the layers, the national rolling industry and all of the binder leaves.
