2010.12.20 - 19:58:58 / [email protected]. Camaguey, Cuba.- Farmers from the central Cuban province of Camaguey, affiliated to the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP) attained a record on the sell of cow milk to state enterprises, which then sell it to the population.

So far, they have delivered to the Dairy Products and Commerce entities about 60 million litters of milk for children under seven years old; for people with medical diets; for the elderly; and for social consumption.

During the past few years, ANAP stockbreeders increased considerably the production of milk, from 34 million litters in 2007 up to the 2010 record.

A member of ANAP in Camaguey, Erasmo Garcia, estimates that by the end of this year the production will be over the 62 million litters; in contrast with the 58,700, 000 the precedent year.

Garcia added that, in spite of adverse climate situations like prolonged draughts, intense rains from August to October, and this early winter, they will attain these figures.

He noted that by increasing the livestock, improving its genetics, rising birth rate, and meting the reproduction program, they might be able to collect about 68 million litters for the state.

Garcia also mentioned that all farmers are making strong efforts so that Cuba decreases the buying of powdered milk in the world market.

The Central Bank of Cuba announced, on its bulletin of economic information from December 20, that a ton of powdered milk, which represents 10,000 litters of milk, costs 3 670 dollars internationally.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Camaguey, which provides nearly the fourth part of the total production of Cuba, has sold the state about 92 million litters.
