19 de diciembre de 2010, 00:20Guantanamo, Dec 19 (Prensa Latina) Fernando Guash Hechavarria, PhD said Cuba''s seismic activity is moderate, considering that only 28 earthquakes with a magnitude over VII in Mercalli''s scale, of XII, have been reported in the country, the Cuban News Agency (AIN) reported.

Guash Hechavarria, an outstanding geophysics engineer who works at the National Seismological Research Center (CENAIS), told AIN that his statement is based on analyses of the estimates of seismic danger in Cuba.

He noted that Cuba is on the North American plate, which has a sliding movement in relation to the Caribbean plate, so the provinces of Santiago de Cuba, Granma and Guantanamo are in the danger zone.

He noted that a change in people's mentality is more powerful than material resources to reduce mobi-mortality in the case of earthquakes and added that an adequate preparation and response is needed to reduce risks in emergency situations caused by earthquakes and other natural disasters.

On March 20, at 2:08 pm, local time, the Network of Stations of the Cuban National Seismological Service reported an earth tremor of 5.5 degrees in Richter's scale some 38 miles southeast of Santiago de Cuba. It was also perceptible in Guantanamo, Granma and Holguin.Since then, other earth tremors of a lesser magnitude have been reported in eastern Cuba.rma/jg
