By Agencia EFE. Havana, Dec. 10 (EFE) .- The president of Cuba's National Assembly, Ricardo Alarcon, said today that the U.S. case of Alan Gross, arrested in Havana for a year on charges of espionage, is "being handled properly and following all the procedures."

Speaking to the foreign media, Alarcon said that Gross had "violated Cuban law, violated national sovereignty and committed crimes that are punishable in the U.S. and are punished."

"Luckily for him he is not imprisoned in the U.S. but is being held in Cuba, not in Guantanamo Bay but in the free part of Cuba," he said.

Asked about the possibility of an "exchange" with the United States between Gross and the five Cubans imprisoned in that country convicted of espionage,Alarcon said that there are two separate cases."

On 3 December the first anniversary of the arrest of Alan Gross, 60 years, and who was a subcontractor of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to distribute laptops, phones and other technological equipment on the island.

The Cuban government accuses him of spying, which Washington strongly denies.Last week the U.S. government renewed its call for the release of Gross and warned that his arrest is a "major impediment" to advance dialogue with Cuba.
