2010.12.10 - 12:04:16 / [email protected]. HAVANA, CUBA.- Cuba assumed for the first time the general secretariat of the Operative Network of Regional Cooperation among Maritime Authorities of The Americas, with the commitment to work for the safety of navigation in the area.

Alejandro Martinez, the new secretary of the organization, told ACN on Thursday that Cuba’s leadership in this period will emphasize the achievement of the uniform implementation of maritime regulations in the region, in order to prevent accidents, spillages of hydrocarbon, and other problems damaging human health and the environment.

He argued that this appointment represents recognition of Cuba’s performance throughout the years in the sphere of civil navigation, the training of specialized staff, the exchange of experiences with several nations, and the management of laws by maritime authorities.

Martinez announced that Bolivia has requested cooperation from his organization in terms of the application and implementation of international maritime agreements, because although it has fleets under its flag the country has no access to the sea.

Cuba is a member of this Network since 1994, and will occupy the organization’s secretariat for a period of two years, according to the agreement reached in the most recent ordinary meeting of the organization, held in Lima, Peru.

Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, México, Panama, Paraguay, Chile, Bolivia and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela are also members of this continental network, which promotes, among its affiliates, the agreements approved by the International Maritime Organization, created in 1948 in Geneva, Switzerland.
