2010.12.05 - 10:08:05 / [email protected]. Havana, Cuba.- Celebrations for the establishment of bonds between the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Cuba began on Friday in Trinidad and Tobago with the screening of a documentary on the work and solidarity of Cuban physicians.

Among the activities of the program –to celebrate on December 8 the 38th anniversary of these bonds-, Trinidadian authorities have scheduled a health fair in the city of San Fernando, the screening of films, and performances of indigenous music, the Prensa Latina news agency reported.

The previous day, the Trinidadian television channel Gayelle, showed the feature film "Health", which evidences the humanitarian and hospitable nature of a state with limited economic resources -like Cuba- while providing free medical care in several countries.

The material –by US producers Connie Field and Gail Reed- also reflects Cuban help in developing nations to train their own professionals, and shows in 93 minutes the work of the island’s physicians in isolated places of Venezuela, Honduras and South Africa, with precarious living conditions.

The establishment of this date was agreed during the first bilateral summit held in 2002 in Havana, where the heads of state and government of CARICOM and Cuba coincided to do so in honor to the beginning of diplomatic relations between Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Guyana and Jamaica and Cuba.

In 1972, these four countries that are members of the regional group decided to break the hostile isolation Cuba was subjected to in the international arena.

Every three years, the parties carry out summit meetings to examine and expand their cooperation and integration projects in fields like education, health, energy and trade, among others.

Celebrations will conclude on December 8 with a cultural gala, in which local artists and prestigious Cuban musician Jose Maria Vitier will participate.(ACN)
