Death sentence was passed 11 years ago. The Cuban Supreme Court on Thursday began hearing an appeal by Raúl Ernesto Cruz León, charged with "terrorism of a continued nature," the official website Cubadebate reported. He was sentenced to death in March 1999.

Cruz León is described as "the author of bomb attacks in tourist centers of [Havana] in 1997," at the direction of the Cuban American National Foundation and Luis Posada Carriles. One of the explosions took the life of an Italian tourist, Fabio di Celmo.

The Foundation has denied any links to Cruz León.After his arrest, Cruz León named another Salvadoran, Francisco Chávez Abarca, as a co-conspirator. Chávez was captured in Venezuela and extradited to Cuba in July of this year.
