By: Lemay Padron Oliveros. Cuba possesses at present only two referees with three-star category, the top of the International Federation of Boxing (AIBA), but none with two-star (Pan-American class), after the new regulation, something that according to the chairman of the National Federation, Alberto Puig de la Barca, should change shortly.

“From next May 27-30 we will organize a Scientific Conference on novel methods of training and refereeing updating at Fajardo Institute, and in the next international tournament Giraldo Cordova Cardin in Memoriam, from June 1-6 of next year, we will develop a course for judges and referees with aims at qualifying them as two-stars. There we expect the attendance of 10 Cubans and other 10 from the rest of Latin America”, asserted Puig in exclusive to Cubasi.

According to the official, the Cardin itself will serve as practical test for the applicants to raise their category, which must be revalidated by the nearly 20 referees who already have an international range according to the previous terminology.

According to the National Commissioner of Boxing, this updating is crucial to raise the level of the domestic pugilism, very appreciative from the sport point of view, but still in debt if we look at it from the perspective of the men in white.

Besides, the presence of Cuban in the most prestigious international tournaments contributes to reduce a little bit the bad calls against our athletes, added the official.

On this regard, he explained that there will also be changes in the punctuation system, although still works the machine scoring system, now coincidence punches won't be the only ones to be counted, but all impacts marked by the judges, and at the end of each round the highest and lowest punctuations will be discarded, and the other three will be added and divide by three to show how is the combat going, which should also be announced to the public between rounds.

Of course, every day it will be evaluated how judges worked and he who is far from reality will be sanctioned immediately. This system will start to be used in the next World Championship for women and in the cadets’ championship, but we started on our last Tournament by teams, he assured.

This experience should be very profitable for our referees on improving their category, one of the main goals for the Cuban boxing in 2011.
