The wife of long-time Alimport Chairman Pedro Álvarez Borrego was among the 65 victims of the Nov. 4 crash of an Aerocaribbean ATR-72 en route from Santiago to Havana, exile Web site Diario de Cuba reported.

Álvarez had married Olga de la Cruz de la Llera just three years ago. De la Cruz accompanied a Venezuelan businesswoman on a trip to Santiago.

During his tenure at the state food import agency, the United States became Cuba’s largest source of food and agricultural goods. In 2009, he was appointed president of the Cuban Chamber of Commerce.
