Peruvian Dr. Jose Luis Aguilar, president of the Latin American Society of Immunology, said in Havana on Friday that Cuba is one of the world’s most developed countries in this field.

Aguilar told reporters that, in spite of its economic limitations, Cuba’s technological advances and research results have turn the island into a point of reference in the area of immunology, particularly in Latin America.

The specialist, who participated in the Ninth Workshop on Immunotherapy held in Havana with the attendance of experts from 20 countries, praised the organization of this event in Cuba by the Center for Molecular Immunology (CIM), which produces monoclonal antibodies and therapeutic vaccines against cancer.

Aguilar added that Peru is interested in using these medicines that have been approved by international certifying organizations and he announced that his country will host the Regional Conference on Immunology in 2012.

The director of the Center for Molecular Immunology, Dr. Agustin Lage, noted that specialists from Italy, France, Australia, Germany, Spain, Israel, Canada and the United States, among other countries, participated in the Workshop on Immunotherapy.

He added that CIM has produced therapeutic vaccines for different types of cancer and monoclonal antibodies for head, neck, brain and oesophagus tumors.
