A Cuban monoclonal antibody registered for the treatment of head and neck tumors is now in clinical trials for 11 other types of cancer, according to Agustin Lage, Director of the Havana-based Molecular Immunology Center.

The antibody has been exported to other countries for treating tumors of the head and neck, the mouth, the larynx, pharynx, tongue, brain and esophagus, Lage said during the 9th International Workshop on Cancer Immunotherapy. However, he said that it is currently being tested for 11 other types of cancer, including that of the lungs.

He noted that tests are currently in their second clinical (random) phase to verify effectiveness. "There is also a vaccine available for lung cancer which is under investigation for effectiveness in treating other types of cancer," said Lage.

The International Workshop on Cancer Immunotherapy has been held every two years since 1994, organized by the Molecular Immunology Center.

Some 200 experts, including 75 foreign experts from Italy, Peru, Mexico, Argentina, the United States, Germany, Spain, Australia, Israel, France, Portugal, Norway, Japan, are taking part in this scientific event.
