By Luis Herrera Yanes — last modified Nov 11, 2010 03:09 PM.Except for the local territory of Trinidad, fallen rain availed the recovery of the underground basins and the main water reservoirs in the central Cuban region of Sancti Spiritus, where hydrological and hydraulic drought is no longer a problem.

Sources from hydraulic resource offices in the territory informed that humid  period ended favorably -101% of the rain’s historic average, considered as normal- while the quantity of fallen rain accumulated in the year was 1 453 mm (110%). Nevertheless, October was rated 70% below and, according to meteorological forecasts, rains won’t be likely to occur during the coming months.

After the relatively short rainy season, local water reservoirs stocks went up to 920, 000 000m³ (72% of their overall capacity). Cuba’s largest water reservoir Zaza dam currently accumulates 722, 000 000m³. Tuinucu, Siguaney, Higuanojo, Banao and Aridanes dams are full, thus the territory reports some 550, 000 000m³ of collected water above the quantity reported same date last year, added the sources.

It was also informed that Trinidad’s underground basin has been recovering very slowly,  that’s why local authorities have made a call on the population to use drinking water as rationally as possible.
