2010.11.02 - 17:27:51 / [email protected]. HAVANA, Cuba. - Cuban dancer Jose Manuel Carreño announced his retirement from the American Ballet Theatre (ABT) with a special performance on June 30, 2011 at the Metropolitan Opera House of New York.

Carreño will be dancing Swan Lake accompanied by Juliet Kent in the role of Odette and Gillian Murphy as Odile, according to a report by Balletin Dance, an Argentinean ballet magazine.

The Cuban dancer told the press that will continue dancing but he will no longer dance the great classics.

Carreño’s career is impressive as he has been principal dancer of the National Ballet of Cuba, the English National Ballet, the Royal Ballet of England and the American Ballet Theater.

He has performed in several stages across the world as guest artist and has made incursions into teaching, something that he might exclusively do in the future.

Carreño started to become known after winning the Gold Medal in the New York International Ballet Competition in 1987 and the Grand Prix at the International Ballet Competition in Jackson, Mississippi, United States in 1990.

He has appeared extensively in Europe, Latin America and the United States, dancing such roles as Franz in Coppélia, Basilio in Don Quixote, Albrecht in Giselle and Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake. He has also performed in the principal roles in such works as Le Corsaire, the Diane and Actéon Pas de Deux and the Black Swan Pas de Deux.

Until June, ballet lovers will be able to enjoy Carreños’ performances.

He is attending the 22nd International Ballet Festival of Havana running until November 7 with the participation of dancers and personalities from 18 countries.
