SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba, Oct 31 (acn) Cuban Minister of Informatics and Communications Ramiro Valdes Menendez visited Sunday the building site of the center that will house data terminal equipment for connecting the fiber optic cable to be laid from Venezuela to the island in eastern Santiago de Cuba.

The equipment will be installed in an area prepared for this purpose at the telephone exchange of Playa Siboney, a beach town located 14 Km off the city of Santiago de Cuba.

Valdes Menendez checked on the progress of the building works, which are nearly completed and include installation of the electric system, air conditioning and protection equipments, among other details.

The minister also visited ETECSA Telecommunications Enterprise’s Operation Management Center in Santiago de Cuba where the cable will be linked to the national network.

Gran Caribe Telecommunications Enterprise’s vice president Waldo Reboredo Arroyo reaffirmed that works to lay the 1,602-Km-long undersea cable will begin by the end of January, 2011, according to the schedule for the execution of the project.

The cable will be laid from Camuri, close to La Guaira port in the Venezuelan state of Vargas to Playa Siboney and in some areas it will fall to a depth of five kilometers.

The laying works should be completed in a month and the line should start working by mid-2011.

The undersea fiber optic cable laying project that includes also Jamaica is expected to cost about $70 million and it will multiply the speed, capacity and quality of communication services in the island, while guaranteeing greater independence and security.
