Taipei - Record champions Cuba won a third straight title in the baseball Intercontinental Cup on Sunday by defeating the Netherlands.

Cuba cruised to a 4-1 victory over the Dutch at the Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium to lift the trophy an 11th time in 17 editions of the tournament. Cuba had also won the last title 2006 over the Dutch.

Earlier Sunday, Italy edged hosts Taiwan 4-3 to take third place and Japan beat South Korea 2-1 in the match for fifth place.

Ten teams took part in the tournament organized by the International Baseball Federation (IBAF). It was launched in 1973 and is currently held every four years.

However, the IBAF wants to end the event and rather focus on promoting baseball for young players.

The issue will be dealt with at an IBAF executive committee meeting in Taiwan on Monday, Lin Tzung-cheng, secretary-general of the Chinese-Taipei Baseball Association, told the German Press Agency
