Woburn, MA —The Burbeen Free Lecture series continues on Thursday, Nov. 4, with a film and lecture entitled “Cuba: Road Trip from Havana to Santiago” presented by Marlin Darrah. Long off-limits to Americans, Cuba — and Havana especially — is the most tragically beautiful place in the Caribbean.

Traveling in a beautiful and classic 1950s black Buick across this fascinating island, the film presents a road trip from Havana to Santiago du Cuba. Along the way, the film explores the Plaza de Cathedral, cigar-making, tobacco fields, beautiful beaches, sugar plantations, forts and colonial architecture.

Winston Churchill, approaching Havana by sea in 1895, wrote that he felt “delirious — as if I had sailed with Long John Silver and first gazed on Treasure Island. Here was a place where anything might happen. A place where something would certainly happen.”

Darrah is one of the most experienced and widely-traveled filmmakers in America. He is the award-winning executive director and cinematographer of the renowned Portland, Ore.-based production company, International Film & Video. Darrah’s 34 years of production experience have taken him to more than 140 countries worldwide, yielding more than 70 documentary and travel-adventure programs to date. PBS, History Channel, Discovery Channel, CNN, FOX, CBS, ABC, TBN and MTV have aired Darrah’s international footage or programs. Darrah’s productions have screened and won awards at more than 15 national and international film festivals.

The program will be held in the Joyce Middle School auditorium at 55 Middle St., in Woburn. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the program begins at 7 p.m. No tickets or reservations are required and admission is free.
