The Cuban baseball squad defeated their rivals from Chinese Taipei at the Intercontinental Cup, currently underway in Douliou City, Yunlin County.

Chinese Taipei was held scoreless Tuesday, yielding first place in the preliminary round to its Cuban opponent in the important baseball tournament.

The two teams, each of which were undefeated in round-robin play prior to the game, were each unable to break the other side's defenses throughout the first five scoreless innings.

Cuba broke the game open with a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning on a single by Yulieski Gouriel, who hit another later in the eighth to give the team a 2-0 lead that it maintained until the end of the game.

Chinese Taipei was held scoreless off Cuba's starter Yulieski Gonzalez, who sent out seven strikes and gave up three hits in six innings.

Chinese Taipei's starter, Hung Chih-lung, pitched seven and two-thirds innings, striking out eight batters and yielding five hits before relief pitcher Lo Ching-lung took over.

With the loss, Chinese Taipei finished its games in the preliminary group with a 3-1 tally to rank in second place behind 3-0 Cuba. Cuba’s next game is set for Wednesday against Hong Kong.

The second round of the tournament will begin Oct. 28.
