Sunday, 24 October 2010 10:37 Source:Prensa Latina. Guantanamo (Solvision).- For the 19th consecutive year, the UN General Assembly will vote on a resolution on Tuesday demanding the lifting of the blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba for the last 48 years.

The resolution will be submitted to a vote during a General Assembly plenum as part of discussion on agenda item No. 14, "The Necessity of Ending the Economic,Commercial, and Financial Blockade Imposed by the United States of America against Cuba."

In its arguments, the resolution reaffirms the principles of sovereign equality among states, nonintervention, and noninterference in internal affairs, as well as freedom of commerce and international navigation.

In addition, it notes the 18 resolutions that have been approved by the General Assembly every year from 1992 to 2009, and the declarations and agreements of different intergovernmental forums, agencies and governments rejecting the promulgation and implementation of these types of measures.

The document asks the UN secretary general to prepare a report on fulfillment of the resolution, to be presented in the 66th session of the General Assembly next year when the issue of the blockade is discussed again. The UN votes on the blockade began on November 24, 1992, when the 47th ordinary session of the Assembly passed its first resolution condemning the blockade 59-3, with 71 abstentions.

Last year, 187 countries voted for the anti-blockade resolution, the highest number ever, with just 3 against (United States, Israel and Palau) and 2 abstentions (Marshall Islands and Micronesia).

According to Cuban authorities, the blockade has cost the island $751.363 billion dollars, a conservative estimate based on the depreciation of the dollar against gold.
