Cuba is proud of its relationship with Qatar, the first in the Gulf to open an embassy in the Caribbean nation, Cuba’s Deputy Foreign Minister Marcos Rodriguez Costa told an event at Qatar University on Monday.

“We are proud of this relationship and our collaboration on healthcare, vaccines and medicine,” he stated at a lecture hosted by the department of international affairs (IA).

Venezuelan Ambassador Dr Juan Antonio Hernandez, Uruguay’s Ambassador Jose Luis Remedi, Dominican Republic’s Ambassador Hugo Guiliani Cury, Cuban Ambassador Armanda Vergara Buene, Qatar’s Ambassador to Cuba Ali bin Khalji, IA faculty, staff and a large number of IA and QU students were present at the event.

“What we have to offer the world is human capital – we send our doctors and top professionals to many countries,” Costa added.

Earlier in his welcome address, Qatar University vice-president for research, Dr Hassan al-Derham, observed that Qatar has over the last decade developed strong ties with the central and south American republics and QU has sought to establish links for academic research and collaboration with several universities there.
