2010.10.16 - 12:02:29 / [email protected]. Havana Celebrates World Food Day. HAVANA, Cuba.- The Cuban capital is celebrating on Saturday World Food Day, with activities in its 15 municipalities.

The program includes community experiences, by way of educational and cultural festivals, in which culinary experts, gastronomy and Agriculture Ministry workers and health representatives participate.

Celebrations are taking place at the waiting rooms of health centers, markets, restaurants and at the Centers for Women and Family Guidance, and exchanges on the communiqué issued by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) are being held.

Ivonne Echevarria, a promoter with the provincial office for Commerce and Gastronomy, told ACN that each territory will develop its own initiatives, with the support of local entities and of the Culinary Association.

The head of the provincial group for health promotion, Carlos Lemus, highlighted that activities will be carried out for several days, as part of the program of the Healthy City movement.

While a sixth of the world population -about one billion people- lives undernourished and hungry, Cubans celebrate World Food Day united and in solidarity, committed to produce more food in a sustainable way.

World Food Day was proclaimed by the FAO in 1979, with the purpose of increasing public awareness of the food problem and to strengthen solidarity, in the face of hunger and malnutrition.
