October 13, 2010. Ecuador Officers Face Inquiry in Police Unrest. QUITO, Ecuador (AP) " The Ecuadorean police have begun disciplinary proceedings against 13 officers who are accused of having played roles in a violent labor protest two weeks ago.

Four colonels, seven captains, a lieutenant and a second lieutenant were placed on administrative leave as the first step in a process under which they could be dismissed after 60 days, depending on the outcome of the investigation,according to a police statement released on Wednesday.

One of the colonels is in charge of the congressional guard; some of its members were accused of assaulting lawmakers and blocking them from entering the Capitol during the protest on Sept. 30. About a dozen people died and 270 were wounded in the uprising by police officers who were angry over a new law that would strip them of promotion bonuses.
