Thursday, 07 October 2010 16:25. La Popular, former Canosa Hardware has been completely restored. I have always liked this city since childhood, perhaps because I lived in the countryside and it was the only city I knew. The truth is that each visit was a gift for me.

By then I was not worried about the movies getting old or about the Milanes Theater, the same where the "Beauty of the Alhambra" was filmed, was in ruins. It really was not that it did not upset me, my child's conscience could not understand such problems.

I grew up and with my years, the city of Pinar del Rio felt the inexorable passing of time. The cinemas were destroyed and public spaces were taking on new connotations.

Many streets inaugurated the legendary potholes and the buildings, symbols of the city dwellers, abandoned their old painted facades.

Sadness overwhelmed me for some time, pretty long by the way, until one day the city smiled at me again.

Nearly two decades passed before the legendary theater was restored and this turned out to be the first of a series of renovations that Pinar del Rio appreciates a lot.

La Coloma, famous for its fishing port that supports it, was one of the first communities to be favored by these actions. The Hermanos Cruz neighborhood, was also benefited: all the buildings that compose it, have been painted and the color and spotlight returned the joy to the milieu.

The Bus Station and its surroundings are different today. Plastic artists of the province have decorated the walls and the stale food kiosks, very much appreciated by travelers, show a better look.

One of the most famous and crowded shops in Vueltabajo, former Canosa Hardware, gave its physical space to become La Popular market, the most recent construction of the city.

Alongside these works other centers have been restored around Pinar. There are still important sites to save, the lack of cinemas for example has deprived future generations to enjoy and educate themselves with this genre.

The spaces for recreation and dancing are scarce. The provincial library Ramón González Coro, is in poor conditions. Many parks maintain their nights in darkness, but what has been done so far gives us encouragement and hope to think that the first step has already been given.

I recognize that there is still a lot to do and investments to endorse, but I have reasons to believe that maybe tomorrow, Pinar becomes gift for me again.
