HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 8 (acn) Fidel Castro's recently published book `La victoria estrategica' (The Strategic Victory) was launched on Thursday in Toronto in a meeting with members of the Association in Solidarity with Cuba in this Canadian city.

The launch was carried out by the president of the Cuban Association of Writers and Artists, Miguel Barnet, who handed out copies of the book to participants and to the Cuban embassy there.

Prior to the event, Elizabeth Hill, president of the solidarity group, welcomed the 74 Cubans attending the 2010 Congress of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) underway in Toronto. She also briefed participants in the meeting on the activities carried out by the nearly 300 members of the friendship organization.

She said that one of their main goals is to carry out actions against the US economic blockade of the Caribbean nation and for the release of Cuban antiterrorists Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino whose wife Elizabeth Palmeiro was present, Rene Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero and Fernando Gonzalez, who remain unjustly imprisoned in the United States since 1998.

The Association in Solidarity with Cuba in Toronto annually celebrates the Day of Friendship with Cuba and other activities to mark the triumph of the Cuban Revolution on January 1 and the attack on the Moncada Garrison on July 26.

They also lead initiatives to assist the Haitian people and raise funds for the Medical Brigade there. Keith Ellis, a professor with the University of Toronto in charge of these actions within the group, said they have already contributed 150,000 dollars for that cause.
