Postmedia News October 7, 2010. WINNIPEG — Cuba beat Canada in straight sets Thursday night in a tune-up for the world women’s volleyball championship.

The sixth-ranked Cubans won 25-19, 25-22 and 29-27, the second time this week they’ve defeated the 24th-ranked Canadians.

The two teams play again Friday.

“It was a big improvement from Tuesday’s match. We hit our rhythm half way through the first set, and in the second and especially the third sets there were many good things happening on the court,” Canadian coach Arnd Ludwig said in a news release.

Sarah Pavan of Kitchener, Ont., led Canada with 16 points, while Tammy Mahon of Holland, Man., added 10 of her own. Gyselle de la Caridad Silva Franco and Yanelis Santos Allegne each had 11 points for Cuba.

Canada opens the world championship against Korea in Osaka, Japan, on Oct. 29.
