HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 6 (acn) The Cuban national men’s volleyball team edged Bulgaria in five sets (22-25, 25-23, 26-28, 30-28, 15-11) on Wednesday evening to secure a spot in the semifinal round of the 2010 FIVB Men’s World Championship that is underway in several Italian cities.

Playing the decisive game of Pool Q —they had a victory apiece against Spain— at the Nelson Mandela Forum in Florence, the young Cubans were led to victory by world volleyball sensation Wilfredo Leon, who scored 22 points, and by team captain
Roberlandy Simon, with 20. Teammates Rolando Cepeda and Fernando Hernandez contributed 15 and 11 units, respectively.

Vladimir Nikolov led the Bulgarians with a game-high 28 points while teammate Matey Kaziyski added 20. With this result, Cuba joins defending champions Brazil, Serbia and Italy in the semifinal round that takes place in Rome on Friday when Cuba will face the Serbians while Brazil will take on the host team.

The finale of the tournament is scheduled for Sunday, October 10, also in the Italian capital. Bulgaria, Russia, Germany and the United States will now play for the spots from fifth to eighth while the Czech Republic, Argentina, Spain and France will face each other for the spots from ninth to twelfth.
