The government of Azerbaijan is discussing an oil and gas cooperation agreement with Cuba, news Website Azerbaijan Business Center reports.

A Cuban trade delegation, led by Deputy Foreign Trade and Investment Minister Oscar Pérez Oliva, is currently in Baku for talks about cooperation in tourism, biotechnology and oil.

Specific negotiations will be held later, Pérez said, according to Azerbaijan Business. Talks with Azeri state oil company SOCAR have not begun yet.

While SOCAR is shipping crude oil and petroleum products and is preparing supply of liquefied gas to the United States and Canada, the company has no production in the western hemisphere. Cuba is seeking foreign participation in offshore oil exploration; SOCAR has limited offshore experience in the Caspian Sea. However, company officials hinted they might be interested in Cuba.

“Today, SOCAR is not the one like 10 years ago,” SOCAR first vice president Khoshbakht Yusifzadeh said, according to Azerbaijan Business.
