Cuban women and men teams improved their places in the World Chess Olympiad held in the Russian city of Khanty-Mansyisk.

  The Cuban women's team defeated Slovenia 3-1. Yaniet Marrero and Sulennis Pina beat Darja Kaps and Vesna Rozic respectively.

Cuba climbed to the 11th position after that victory and is now the best placed for Latin America and the Caribbean.

In the women's section for Latin America other winners included Argentina (Denmark 4-0), Ecuador (Bolivia 3-1), Mexico (IBCA 3-1) and Peru (Philippines 2.5-1.5). Brazile drew with Montenegro 2-2.

The best Latin American chess player, Leinier Dominguez, defeated first board Jan Smeets while Fidel Corrales was defeated by Stellwagen. The other two matches were tied and in the end Cuba drew with Holland.

In the men's section for Latin America Colombia defeated Uruguay 3-1, Chile-Lebanon 3.5-0.5 and Peru- Jersey 3.5-0.5. Argentina drew with Sweden.

More than 150 men and 119 women teams have registered for the Olympiad. A total of 1,380 players are competing in the two sections. The statistics show that more than 772 titled players are present, out of them 247 GMs, 63 WGMs, 160 IMs, 87 WIMs, 81 FMs, and 80 WFMs.
