The Cuban men's and women's chess teams which will compete in the 39th World Chess Olympiad travel on Saturday to Moscow, and from there to the Siberian city of Khanty-Mansiysk.

The men, led by grandmaster Leinier Domínguez, the top chess player in Latin America, aspire to finish among the top 15 in this tournament, which brings together some 1,300 players.

Dominguez is joined by Lázaro Bruzón, Yuniesky Quesada, Fidel Corrales and Holden Hernández, who hold an average of 2,652 Elo points, valid for an 18th- place ranking for the first round draw.

The Cuban women are led by the current national champion, Oleiny Linares, who won a bronze medal in the previous Olympiad two years ago in Dresden, Germany.

Linares is joined by Lisandra Ordaz, Yaniet Marrero, Sulennis Piña and Maritza Arribas, and the team also holds an 18th-place ranking, with an average of 2,333 Elo points.

The Olympiad will last 11 rounds under the Swiss system, and organizers say it will feature 159 menâ?Ös teams and 119 womens teams.
