HAVANA, Cuba.- Commander in Chief Fidel Castro attended the lecture given in this capital by US scientist Alan Robock, a
professor with Rutgers University, in New Jersey, entitled “Climatic Consequences of Nuclear War.”

The specialist from the Department of Environmental Sciences of that center of higher studies said that only disarmament will prevent the possibility of an environmental disaster, an occasion in which Fidel called scientists to spread the consequences a world war would have for life on the planet.

Under the watchful eyes of the leader of the Cuban Revolution and the presence of representatives from the island’s scientific community, Robock, showed how planet Earth would be covered by smoke if a nuclear war takes place, the National television Newscast reported.

Next, the scientist warmed about the consequences a war in different scales would have for life, in all cases: deaths by shock waves, the absence of light on Earth, which would bring low temperatures under freezing point, and the subsequent destruction of crops.

He specified that he and a group of professors from Rutgers University went into the topic of nuclear winter in greater depth, considering the nuclear arsenals existing in various countries.

Robock, an expert on issues related to the effects of nuclear weapons on the environment and on climate change, stated that this made it possible for him to conceive climatic models for various types of war.

For his part, the Commander in Chief reiterated his call upon the scientific community to prevent the danger of a war, and considered that publicity materials warning the inhabitants of the planet about the danger a war of nuclear characteristics represents should appear on television channels from around the world in the same way other advertisements do.

Fidel pointed out that it’s possible to raise awareness on this danger and called not to adopt a pessimistic attitude. He thanked the US scientist for his lecture and stressed that Cuba will contribute to spread this knowledge in the world.
