Sept. 12, 2010. Wexford, Pa.—The Pitt women’s soccer team played to a 1-1 tie against Kent State on Sunday. The Panthers finish their non conference schedule with a 3-4-1 record.

 The Panthers almost struck early in the contest, after Liz Carroll found herself open on a Katelyn Ruhe corner kick. Carroll’s shot was stopped on a diving effort by Kent State goalkeeper Kelly Sherwood.

The Panthers did, however, get on the board first, when Ashley Cuba picked up her fourth goal of the season in the 35th minute. Carroll sent a through pass between two Kent State defenders and Cuba connected on a shot that hit off the right bar and into the goal.

 For Cuba, the goal is the 11th of her career, moving her into a tie for sixth place all time on the Panthers goal scoring list.

Pitt finishes it's non conference schedule with a 3-4-1 record.    The Panthers outshot the Golden Flashes 4-1 in the first period and took a 1-0 lead at halftime.

 In a back and forth game, Kent State was able to tie the game in the 88th minute when Jessacca Gironda scored on a pass from Kelly Heaton, firing the shot into the right side of the goal.

 In the first overtime, the Panthers held a 3-0 edge in shots. Kent State outshot the Panthers in the second overtime, 3-0.

The Panthers finished with 12 shots to the Golden Flashes 8. Both teams had two corner kicks and 16 fouls.

An injury-stricken Panther squad was forced to play eight starters the entire game.The contest concluded the Panthers non-conference schedule. Pitt will travel to Morgantown on Thursday to open up Big East play against West Virginia. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
