2010.09.09 - 14:47:11 / [email protected]. HAVANA, CUBA.- Idalis Ortiz and Oreidis Despaigne gave Cuba its first two medals in the opening day of the World Judo Championships that began on Thursday at the Yoyogi National Gymnasium of Tokyo, Japan.

Ortiz walked away with one of the bronze medals in the women’s +78-kilo division after she fell in semifinals to Japanese Mika Sugimoto but won the bronze-medal bout against South Korean Na-Young Kim.

Despaigne’s performance in the men’s 100 kilograms was similar to that of Ortiz as he lost in semifinals to Japanese Takamasa Anai but later took the bronze medal beating Uzbekistan’s Utkir Kurbanov.

The two other Cuban representatives in this first day of competitions, Yalennis Castillo (women’s 78 kilos) and Oscar Braison (men’s +100 kg), were eliminated in their second bouts.

On Friday, Osmai Cruz (men’s 81 kg), Asley Gonzalez (men’s 90 kg) and Onix Cortes (women’s 70 kg) will compete representing the Caribbean island.
