HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 25 (acn) The Cuban National Ballet (BNC) will stage three-act classic Don Quixote for the first time in Australia by the end of September, as part of the Brisbane Festival celebrations.

According to the official website of the Festival, the BNC's performance is scheduled for Friday September 24-Sunday October 3 at the Lyric Theatre of Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC).

The BNC's choreography of Don Quixote by director of the company prima ballerina Alicia Alonso is known for its technical and conceptual richness, and distinctive and expansive interpretation of the work's central themes.

Their interpretation of the story has been praised for the dignified and serious manner in which the title character is portrayed - an aspect of the story which is often minimized in modern remakes.

The Festival's website also announces the performance of Cuba's contemporary dance company Danza Contemporanea de Cuba at the Playhouse, QPAC, from Tuesday 14-Saturday 18 September.

The company will stage two programs each featuring three dance works: Demo-N/Crazy by choreographer Rafael Bonachela, Carmen by Kenneth Kvamstrom and Folia by Jan Linkens.

Both programs finish with Mambo 3XXI by choreographer George Cespedes.

With a soundtrack combining the music of Cuban bandleader and composer Perez Prado with seventies disco, techno, trip-hop and ambient, Mambo 3XXI adds a flourish of 21st century street attitude to the best of Cuban dance, says the website's announce.
