HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 16 (acn) Cuba is closer to its goal of transporting more than half of the goods circulating in the country via railroad, according to recent statements by Transportation minister Cesar Arocha.

In order to fully recover the island's railroad, a total of 6,000 kilometers of railroad tracks have to be repaired, as well as workshops and workers will have to receive further training, explained by vice president of the Council of Ministers Antonio Enrique Lusson.

Arocha said several stretches have been recovered and noted that at present 36 percent of goods are transported by train but the goal for next year is 52.

He mentioned sugar cane, food, construction materials, fertilizers and fuel as the main products transported by train.

Cuba made an investment of 5 billion dollars on railroads, bought 112 locomotives from China and imported 550 wagons, sheet steels and equipment for the transportation of fuel, said the minister.
