CIEGO DE AVILA, CUBA.- Several construction units from the central city of Ciego de Avila are working on the repair of the causeway connecting mainland with the keys of Jardines del Rey, one of the most important tourist resorts of Cuba.

The investments on the 17-Km long stone road built 22 years ago over the sea off the north coast of the province include resurfacing, placing traffic signs and breakwaters on both sides of the causeway.

The head of the investment group of the Highway Administration Center in Ciego de Avila, Ruben Galvan Hernandez, said the repair works are part of a national plan to improve the quality of this type of roads that were damaged by hurricane Ike by the end of 2008.

Galvan Hernandez said four bridges have been repaired up to date, four kilometers have been repaved and more than 30,000 cubic meters of stones have been thrown into the water to reinforce six kilometers in the eastern part of the way, which suffers the greatest impact from the waves and hurricanes.

The brigades are currently working on increasing the security and resistance of the 11th viaduct of 80 meters of length.

According to one of the specialists working in the transportation of materials to the building site, some 15 trucks of 5,000 cubic meters each of stones and rocks are used on the expansion of the seafronts up to seven meters width.
