HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 24 (acn) Reverend Tom Smith, who is in Cuba as part of the 21st US-Cuba Friendshipment Caravan, told the Cuban News Agency that the people in the United States are hungry for information on Cuba.

During the welcoming of the caravanistas on Friday at Havana’s Jose Marti International Airport, Smith told ACN that there is a “media blockade in the US against Cuba, people do not know the issues and do not understand that we are living in a different world.”

He stressed that the US has trading relations with Vietnam and China and that the idea that “we should not have relations with Cuba because it’s a communist country does not apply.”

Reverend Tom Smith added that the fact that Cuba has made so many contributions to the world in terms of improving the quality of life of people, aid that they have offered to various countries is just astounding.

The Pastors for Peace representative said that throughout the caravan’s tour to 125 US cities, they urged people to visit Cuba for themselves. “It is the best evidence that the island is not like the US media outlets want them to believe”, said Smith.

In reference to this year’s caravan dedicated to Cuban children, Smith said that when you look at the island’s “children there is a twinkle in their eye, a zest for life as opposed to the US where most of our urban cities is full of children with lifelessness in their eyes, they have lost hope, the school system has failed”.

Reverend Tom Smith told ACN that the caravan toured 125 cities and collected 100 tons of humanitarian aid, including 9 school busses destined for the Cuban people.

He added that they showed different communities in the US videos on Cuba and information they had never seen before. “They were astonished and we explained why Washington’s economic blockade is cruel and inhumane”, said Smith.

The 85 caravanistas will participate in different activities on the island which include the main activity for the 57th anniversary of the attack against the Carlos Manuel de Cespedes and Moncada Garrisons which will be held in the city of Santa Clara.
