The magazine entitled The Golden Age was launched for the first time on July of 1889, literary publication written in New York dedicated for children of Latin America.

Characterized for its excellence and delicacy, during the months of August, September and October of that same year the publication continued to be promoted but barely in four collections, but its imprint remained among all Cubans.

The magazine was not published again because the editor, who paid the expenses of the Golden Age, wanted Jose Marti to talk to the children about fearing God and he refused. It meant lying to the readers and he had already said: “Gods are in reality poetry of the imagination”.

The first paragraphs of the dedication section of the book revealed with transparency the essence of nature and the why of objects, supreme interest of Marti in making sure people knew the truth of everything that surrounds us.

In the beginning of the book, that had 32 pages with beautiful and illustrative engravings, the National Hero said: “…This daily is published to converse once a month with good friends…”.

The texts of the magazine are stories, essays and poems that show the humanism and idealism of Marti. The universal human values reach us through a broad spectrum of issues and epochs.

The Golden Age included clear writings on the world that surrounds children and for them to know how one lived and live in America and other lands.

In each page, he advised on the path of wisdom and expressed the sentimental commitment for the country of birth; teach moral values, love and desires of justice to the new generations.

These values are shown in one of his stories when the character Pilar gives a sick girl her pink shoes and Bebé giving his cousin Raul the new sword of Mr. Don Pomposo; he celebrated the victory of Meñique over his stronger adversaries among other children´s stories.

There is the surprising history of Bolivar in Venezuela; San Martin, of the Rio de la Plata; and Hidalgo in Mexico and the three heroes, where he highlighted the values of Latin American heroes and their desires in fighting for independence.

In 1905, the Golden Age appeared in the form of a book; from this moment on, many have been the editions of the book. The four collections of the magazine were collected in a notebook with the same name which was published an endless number of times and is part of the Cuban and Latin American literary treasures.

Despite the 121 years of existence of this children´s literary classic, the book maintains its freshness, beauty and validity as it talks to the children in a universal language and is not out of date with current times.

The book continues to comply with the objective for which it was conceived “a pleasant and educational children’s book with a poetic language that will arouse the interest and imagination of the special reader”.

The Golden Age, paradigm and exemplary, presents us today with impeccable and long lasting use that emerged thanks to the exceptional virtue of Cuba’s National Hero, this sincere friend which accompanies us each minute with exceptional contributions that surpasses the framework of a magazine written in Spanish at the end of the 19th century is today more valid than ever.
