HAVANA, CUBA.- Cuban Young Reynaldo Gil Pons won the silver medal in the 60 International Mathematical Olympiad LI, which concludes tomorrow in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Eduardo Perez, Gil Pons coach, told Granma newspaper that the only Cuban representative to that event scored 26 points and came just one shy of the gold medal.

Gil Pons studies at the Antonio Maceo Pre-university Institute in eastern Santiago de Cuba province is in his twelfth grade, and at the 2008Central America Olympiad held in Honduras, he achieved perfect scores and gold, and bronze at the 2009 International in Germany.

 In these competitions, which began in 1959 in Romania, Cuba won the gold medal in 2001, when his delegation had six young men, an occasion on which the representation of the island won a gold medal, one silver and three bronze.

 Gil Pons plans to study computer science and follow the example of his parents, Reynaldo and Aurora, PhD and teachers in that specialty at the Oriente University.
