cableVice President of Mobil Services of the Telecommunications Company of Cuba (ETECSA) Maximo Lafuente confirmed on Wednesday that an underwater cable with Venezuela will benefit the Cuban cellular network.

The cable will increase international communications traffic, said Lafuente in a press release.

Cell services including roaming will benefit from this cable said Lafuente, who added that the project is set to finish in 2011 and will cover around 310 miles from La Guaira in Venezuela to Santiago de Cuba.

The project costs are valued at US $70 million and will also include Jamaica, said vice-president of the joint venture Gran Caribe S.A. Waldo Reboredo, who will be in charge of the system when it is completed.

French-Chinese venture Alcatel Shanghai Bell is in charge of the line construction under the Caribbean Sea. The construction began two months ago in a beach near Santiago de Cuba, more than 534 miles south-east of Havana.

The project will be financed by Venezuelan banks and Cuban funds. The cable will have the capacity to be extended to Haiti, the Dominican Republic and the Lesser Antilles, he added.

The existence of the cable will allow Cuba to multiply by three thousand times its actual transmission speeds for data, images and sound, explained Reboredo, who added that the participating countries will benefit also in social exchange.
