Sancti Spiritus is currently Cuba’s third most aged territory and it is expected that half the population here will classify as senior adults by the year 2025.

Dr. Manuel Casas, first geriatrician graduated in Sancti Spiritus who has treated elderly people for over thirty years affirmed that communication is what they need the most.

According to the expert, it’s not only a matter of communication within the family and in society. Communication with the physician is also needed because if the patient doesn’t do any exchange with the physician, he or she will become a complete failure.

Most frequent diseases reported among elderly patients in this locality are the so called geriatric syndromes, that is, falls, depression, immobilization and the wrong use of drugs because prescriptions in this case need to be very specific.

“I generally suggest the patients to practice some exercises, to register in the senior adults’ classes and to improve communication with their relatives because we must adapt ourselves to the circumstances and old age must be handled with dignity”, Dr. Casas commented.

Sancti Spiritus is currently Cuba’s third most aged territory and it is expected that half the population here will classify as senior adults by the year 2025.

Renowed Dr. Manuel Casas is also a researcher and a professor for the senior adults’ program of classes in Sancti Spiritus. He is also the regional coordinator for the program of life and community health of the Cuban Council of Churches. On the other hand, he acts as Diaconal Presbyter which implies a lifetime serving the Church.
