Cuban singer and composer Carlos Varela will represent the Caribbean island at the Chase 2010 Latino Cultural Festival to take place at Queens Theater in the Park, in New York .

The program held for nine days every summer is aimed at presenting “the diversity of Latin and Latin American cultures” according to Claudia Norman, its artistic director.

For the first time in eight years, the event, which will run until August 8, will welcome an artist coming from Cuba.

On this occasion, Varela, who toured the United States in May, will perform at Flushing Medows Park , where he will offer a concert on August 6.

In addition to the Cuban troubadour, other artists like famous Argentinean pop-folk musician Leon Greco, the author of the piece “Solo le pido a Dios”; Jorge Velosa, creator of the Colombian carranga music style, and Susana Baca, who revitalized the Afro-Peruvian music, will also participate.

This 14th edition of the event, the only multidisciplinary Latino festival held in New York , will include other artistic expressions, like dance, cinema, comedy and poetry, which this time will be represented by artists from Mexico , Chile , Ecuador , Venezuela , Puerto Rico and the United States , among other countries.
