ACN. Monitoring services of Cubans with HIV in the country´s central region were completed with the opening of a Molecular Biology Lab at the "Camilo Cienfuegos" General Hospital in this city.

After the assembling of the new equipment, patients coming from the provinces of Camaguey,Ciego de Avila, Sancti Spiritus, Villa Clara and Cienfuegos now have, at their disposal, state-of-the-art technology to determine the development of the virus, similar to that used in developed nations.

Dr. Miriam Ramos, a second degree specialist of Microbiology, told ACN that the lab makes it possible to separate plasma from blood, process samples in a safety cabinet, and obtain the necessary number of copies from the virus.

The installation of the new high-tech equipment allows physicians to complete the three necessary parameters -clinical, immunological and virological- to monitor the evolution of patients, establish therapeutics at the right moment, and improve their quality of life, underlined the Dr.

So far, according to Ramos, some 250 patients infected with the HIV virus from the five central provinces have benefited from the services of the new facility.

Before the opening of the "Camilo Cienfuegos" Molecular Biology Lab, the samples were analyzed at the Comandante Manuel Fajardo (Havana) and Juan Bruno Zayas (Santiago de Cuba) hospitals.

In Sancti Spiritus, the municipalities with the largest amount of cases are Fomento,Cabaiguan and the provincial capital.

At present, some 30 million people from around the world suffer as a consequence of this virus.
