With a formidable demonstration: four wins in the same number of fights on the tatami, Robelis Despaigne was proclaimed university world champion of taekwondo, the first one in the history of this sport for Cuba.

The fight with venue in Las Traviesas Pavilion, in the Spanish city of Vigo, was one of the most exciting for this giant from Santiago de Cuba (he is almost two meters tall) who had already shown his talent with a fifth world position in the tournament for mayors in 2009.

Robelis’s victories were 3-2 against Brazilian Jose Eduardo Kuntgen; 14-8 in quarterfinals against the Iranian Hamidreza Bayat; for forfeit on the Korean Cheon Park Beom (injured) in semifinals, while for the gold medal he defeated easily 6-3 the local Mikel Bernal.

The head coach of the men team, Leudin Gonzalez, after knowing the results of one of his boys - traveled to the competition accompanied by coach Roberto Abreu -, valued as excellent this medal for the Cuban school of taekwondo, while he remembered that in 2007 Gesler Viera also won a gold medal, but in a world championship of mayors.

Robelis Despaigne is considered by many the relief for our Olympic champion, Angel Valodia Matos, whom he had as team mate for a short period of time, but of whom he has said: "I look up to him since I began in this sport and I learned a lot in those months we trained together."

The other representative for Cuba in the opening day of the world tournament was the Olympic and world bronze medalist Daynellis Montejo (49 kg) who lost 1-3 in his first fight with the Spanish Cristina Sanchez. In the following fight, in the play off, "Cuquita" lost again 1-5 against the South Korean Myeong Suk Park who finally finished with the bronze medal.

In the rest of the competitive days left of this 11th university world championship of taekwondo two Cubans will walk again on the tatami of the Spanish city. On Saturday the ninth place of the last world championship Angel Modesto Mora (68 kg), while in the closing day will debut the world runner-up, Taimi Castellano (67 kg).
