Cervantes Quijote
Cuban ambassador to Spain, Alejandro González, donated to the Cervantes Museum of Esquivias (Toledo) a first edition of El Quixote published alter the triumph of the revolution in his country.

Invited by authorities of the Castilla-La Mancha town council the ambassador gave the work by the Spanish dramatist published in 1960 to the director of the Cervantes Museum, Susana Garcia.

This gift is proof of Cuban people's affection for Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616) and their passion for the most universal of his creations: The ingenious hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha, Gonzalez explained.

Also participating in the event were Jose Roseli, president of the Cervantina de Esquivias Association, Pedro Israel Sánchez, mayor of the Castellano-manchego town council, and the governor of the neighboring municipality of Casarrubuelos, Julián Sánchez.

In 1960 when the recently created national publishing house, Don Quixote considered it the first modern novel and inaugurated the collection of what became known as the Library of the People in the island.

The publishing of 100,000 books, unprecedented in the Caribbean nation, revealed the purpose of the publishers to reach the most humble reader, ignored for decades by the pseudo republic by the privileged classes.

Illustrations by the draftsman and engraver Gustavo Dore (1833-1883) and a drawing by Pablo Picasso adorn this marvelous edition in four volumes.

The Esquivias Museum, an illustrious mansion of the 16th century belonged to hidalgo Don Alonso Quijada de Salazar, member of the Quijada family, wealthy esquivanio land owners.

Many biographers of Cervantes consider that an Alonso Quijada, ancestor of the owner of the house was whom Cervantes derived his inspiration to create the famous Don Quixote.

Don Alonso was a relative of Catalina de Palacios, wife of Cervantes, and granted part of his mansion for the couple to live.

Declared in 1971 an Historical-Artistic Monument, it wasn' t until 1994 that it was inaugurated as a museum.

This museum displays several editions of the Ingenious hidalgo translated into different languages and, alongside, is the Cuban edition.
