Judo Lupetey
The 2001 world champion and Olympic bronze medalist in 2004, Yurisleidis Lupetey, has been nominated to form part of the Athletes Commission of the International Judo Federation. The voting will take place in the next world championship in Tokyo, Japan.

"I learnt about it just a few days ago during the Pan American championship, held in El Salvador, and it is an honor for me to be the American representative for this distinction, which is also a tribute to the development of Cuban judo, especially among women ," said the Holguin native.

According to the official communication, the Cuban shares nomination with Algerian Soraya Haddad, world and Olympic bronze medalist (2005) and (2008), Korean An Kum Ae, runner up in Beijing 2008 and third place in the world cup of 2005 and 2007, and Romanian Alina Dumitru, Olympic champion in Beijing and double bronze medalist in 2005 and 2007.

During the world championship to be held in Tokyo, all participants will vote for one of the four judokas who will join the International Federation Executives as athletes’ representatives while replacing in this function Chinese Tong Wen.

"This nomination is already an award for Cuba," reiterated Lupetey, who reached the gold medal in her division (57 kg) in the recently concluded continental tournament after a period of almost two years without competing because of the constant injuries and knee and elbow surgeries. "It was very exciting and I'm just thinking on the world cup now," she said.

On certain comments born as a result of her poor results she said: “I do not consider myself an old athlete or my best times have already passed. I feel the same or better than those 15 years old girls in the team. There are lots of people helping me and supporting me. These last years can be equal or better than the firsts.”

Finally, Lupetey stressed that the current judo team is capable of obtaining a good result in the next world championship. "We just have to support each other all, as Daima, Legna, Amarilys and Driulis did with me. It's another step, but we are all eager to show we can make history as well."
